What people are saying about the Forum......
"Thank you for inviting us to be part of your fabulous conference yesterday. Your line up of speakers were truly excellent and we felt privileged to participate in the day. I expect you’re recovering from all your efforts at this time – it takes a lot of time, commitment and motivation to put together such an exceptional conference. Well done.
- Jenny Colman Human Factor Specialist/Ergonomist, Incident Response Programs Investigation Division WorkSafeBC (2010)
Congratulations on the Aviation Leadership Forum 2010. In my 40 years in Aviation this was one of the best functions I have ever attended. I enjoyed the different perspectives on Safety Leadership, and I was particularly impressed with Darcy's concept of networking for personal relationships, rather than "pure" business contacts. I look forward to your Future Forums, and opportunities for Leadership Development."
- Bob Osterman Station Manager YVR, Airbase Canada (2010)
"I inadvertently learned about the aviation leadership conference. Choosing to attend was such a good decision. The event was fast-paced, interesting, and uplifting. Just being in the same room as interesting and passionate people that share my interest in enhancing aviation safety would have made attending worth it. However, being able to meet them, listen to their insights, and discuss ideas with them made attending priceless."
- Mireille Goyer (2010)
I had the pleasure of attending the Aviation Leadership Forum, hosted by the Women In Aviation. The first thing that struck me as I entered the meeting hall was the calibre of the attendees. I saw two CEO’s of local airlines, a Vice President of YVR, and directors of government agencies. There were some excellent opportunities to network and I was able to make some new connections and thoroughly enjoyed that aspect. However, the real treat was the excellence of the people presenting. The speeches were timely, relevant, informative, and if I may say, quite inspirational. The presentations went from high level discussions of leadership, to reviews of lessons learned from accidents, to practical tips on how to safely escape from an aircraft submerged in water.
I would highly recommend this event to anyone in aviation. Gerry Binnema"

"Thanks for inviting me to be a part of the prestigious group of individuals at the Aviation Leadership Forum on February 17th 2009. I was there to give a speech on safety and leadership, but I think my real reason to be there is the energy I receive when I meet inspired, interesting people with a common purpose and passion.
After I met Teara in 2008, I could see that she was part of something bigger - a spark that has been created and is being driven by women in aviation who believe in leadership.
As folks who attended would tell you, I use a metaphor about business and relationships, and I tell a story about a bowl. If you think of relationships like a bowl, and you hold it in your hands, then the amount of effort you put into building a relationship is directly reflected in how big that bowl is. The more connected you are with someone, the bigger your bowl. This allows you to "put more in" to your bowl when you need to call on that relationship. As an example, say one day you go up to your instructor or prof and say "Can I borrow your car for the day?" - well, it would be considered weird - quite simply, your bowl there is barely big enough to put a pen in. But if you ask your best friend to borrow their car, of course your bowl is big enough to put a car in. And probably more!
I tell this story, because business IS all about relationships. And leadership is seeing these as possibilities and ensuring both parties receive benefit.
Sure enough, through the forum I had the opportunity to connect with AC Pilot Darryl Sorrenson, whose common interest in safety systems meant he invited me and BCSA's two senior leaders in engineering & technical programs to a test flight in the Airbus A330 simulator - one of my colleagues told me about the expression on his kid's faces that night when they asked what he did at work that day, and he nonchalantly said "I flew to Hong Kong and back!". That lead to a broader conversation around safety systems and how the provincial public safety system in technologies like boilers, or elevators or even ski lifts can benefit from the aviation communities' asset management and safety management strategies. The interesting part will be to see how we can both add value to our respective organizations through this information sharing.
Another contact made that day was with Bill Yearwood, at the Transportation Safety Board, and later we sat down and shared our thinking around trailing ropes used by helicopters, and possible applicable codes and standards. We were able to be a sounding board and provide some information as one of BCSA's partners in the provincial safety system is with the passenger ropeway industry in BC. In addition, the model for an independent investigator is of interest to us, and there are many values our two organizations share - in particular the leadership to know when to seek out expertise and to acknowledge that good causal analysis uses diverse sets of experts, but in addition, also uses independent, non-partisan observers to see what we sometimes cannot. I hope we can leverage this into our ongoing research capabilities.
Thank you for inviting me. I loved the positive energy. Catherine Roome"
